Manchester United are considering a move to bring 27-year-old Spain international Unai Simón from La Liga side Athletic Club next year, per Fichajes.
The Manchester Reds have been investing thoroughly in bringing quality additions to their defence; we saw that with Leny Yoro and De Ligt transfers, the chiefs at Old Trafford could repeat similar philosophy to bring a new goalkeeper to Carrington.
United could make big splash for Unai Simón
Unai Simón has been one of the most consistent keepers in La Liga for some time now, and his heroics in the Euro 2024 inspired Spain to a summer silverware. And United are ready to invest considerable sums in bringing the 27-year-old native of Vitoria-Gasteiz to Old Trafford.
Simón has been with his current employers for over a decade after arriving in 2011 from CD Aurrera de Vitoria. However, it took him a while before donning the gloves as the first-choice goalie, something that didn’t happen till the 2018/19 season. He has been the primary man between the ricks since and has represented the Basque club nearly 200 times while keeping 66 clean sheets.
Will Onana’s error-prone performances cost him his spot?
Interest in Unai Simón comes as a surprise at United. At the moment, Andre Onana is the undisputed starter with the gloves for the English heavyweights, with Altay Bayindir acting as an understudy to the former Ajax goalkeeper. Tom Heaton is the third-choice keeper to complete GK’s union.
Onana has been error-prone since his highly anticipated move from Inter Milan last summer, which makes it an understandable agenda for chiefs at Carrington next year. That being said, any move for Simón will take a hefty punch to the transfer budget considering how highly regarded the shot-stopper has become off late.
