Manchester United have been dealing with a bit of a midfield crisis despite the season only starting last month, and Erik ten Hag has a mammoth task ahead of him, especially after that defeat against Arne Slot’s Liverpool at Old Trafford last week.
The game against the Merseyside Reds was a tricky game tie from the outside. Watching Casemiro get scuffed in the halftime to watch the visitors dominate an academy duo was an intricating sight to see.
Midfield crisis looms large
United have an option to get an easy way out of the situation by dipping in the transfer market. Hold up, the market is closed; how can that be done? While the transfer window concluded with the turn of the month, the clubs can still sign players who are free agents, and one of the most esteemed midfielders in the world is on that list.
French midfielder Adrien Rabiot is still a free agent after his contract at Juventus expired in July.
He has been subject to links with multiple clubs from around Europe, the latest of them being AC Milan. The Italian giants explored possibilities to sign Rabiot in the final days of the window; however, they decided against it with Ismael Bennacer continuing at San Siro.
Rabiot still dreams of Premier League move
The 29-year-old is still looking for clubs and remains keen for a move to the Premier League. And Manchester United would sound a familiar name in his books, as Rabiot was subject to aggressive links with a move to Old Trafford two years ago. He has never hidden his desires to play in the English top tier, and Gazzetta dello Sport insists that Rabiot’still dreams’ of a move to England.
The former PSG midfielder has previously said: ‘I have always said that I’d like to play in England in my career. I still have that desire. I’d like to evolve in the Premier League. It’s the league; it’s the level of play that’s going on; that’s what attracts me most. It corresponds to my qualities. ‘ I haven’t got a Premier League team in mind right now. I haven’t chosen a team or anything. It’s a general thing.’
Erik ten Hag did bring in Manuel Ugarte from Rabiot’s former side on deadline day; however, Sunday was the evidence that the club needs more than just the Uruguayan to strengthen their midfield.
