Manchester United fully behind Erik ten Hag

Manchester United have started the Premier League with two defeats in three matches.

While they were beaten in the last minute away at Brighton, Erik ten Hag’s side was absolutely outclassed by Arne Slot’s Liverpool who won 3-0 at Old Trafford before the international break.

Erik ten Hag has the support of Manchester United’s hierarchy.

There was widespread criticism of the United boss in the aftermath of the Liverpool defeat with many fans and media personnel believing that it is only a matter of time before he is relieved of his duties.

However, Omar Berrada and Dan Ashworth have both provided their full support to the Dutchman as Manchester Evening News reported the former saying:

“Erik has our full backing and we have worked very closely together in this transfer window. We’re going to continue working very closely with him to help him get the best results out of the team.”

Ashworth, who checked-in as the Manchester United sporting director from Newcastle United also backed his colleague’s statement as he said:

“All I can do is reiterate what I remember saying, I’ve really enjoyed working with Erik for the last eight weeks.”

One would not expect the board of directors to throw the manager under the bus when the club is already going through a rough patch, but given the duration that he has been under pressure for, it would be remiss of the board to not start exploring their options to replace him in case the results continue on a southward trend.

has had it his way time and again at Old Trafford yet the same tactical mistakes are on show.

Underperforming players like Marcus Rashford and Antony have the manager’s backing, whereas those like Jadon Sancho, who was impressive in the Champions League on loan elsewhere, and Scott McTominay, who was a handy back-up option in midfield, have been let go of by the manager without devising plans to get the best out of them.

Casemiro, a five-time Champions League winner, is facing criticism as he is being forced to do duties which he has never done before in his career such as distributing the ball from a deeper position, instead of doing what he does best – providing defensive cover to the back four.

Ten Hag’s affinity towards bringing players with a past from Ajax Amsterdam barely needs any introduction and that too is a tactic which has backfired with most players formerly playing in the Eredivisie struggling in the Premier League.

United need to act sooner rather than later, otherwise they will be faced with yet another substandard finish if time runs out to make changes in a very competitive division. This season, they also have the UEFA Europa League to play for and with Ten Hag at the helm, capturing such silverware seems like a very distant proposition at this point in time.
