Ashworth reveals Sancho wanted to leave Man United and join Chelsea

Manchester United loaned out Jadon Sancho to Premier League rivals Chelsea on Deadline Day. The Blues are obliged to permanently sign him up next summer in a fee that could touch £25 million.

Sancho was left out of Manchester United’s squad for their opening Premier League fixture against Fulham due to a ear infection but his exclusion in the week after against Brighton was labelled as a technical decision by Erik ten Hag.

As a result, there has been a lot of speculation that the player’s falling out with the United boss would have resulted him in being forced out of Old Trafford. But sporting director Dan Ashworth has refuted such claims as he insists that Sancho was the one who wanted to try a new challenge, which is why he left for Chelsea.

He was quoted saying the following by Express:

“Nothing to do with that. It was a decision that we made – if it’s right for Jadon and it’s right for us to move on. He wanted to explore the opportunity at Chelsea, like Scott McTominay wanted to explore the opportunity at Napoli, like Aaron Wan-Bissaka wanted to explore the opportunity at West Ham.”

Sancho is due to make his Chelsea debut after the international break when they face Bournemouth, while United face an uphill battle against newly promoted Southampton at the St. Mary’s Stadium on matchday four.

The Red Devils will

head into the fixture after two straight defeats in the Premier League and after very poor performances from their offensive department and Marcus Rashford in particular, they are hoping that they are not left to rue their decision of letting Sancho leave for a domestic rival.

He would have been a fantastic option on either flank especially given the way he performed while on loan at Borussia Dortmund in the second half of last season as well.

Manchester United would have benefitted from the player’s dynamism and ability to take on defenders, something which practically all of their wingers are currently lacking.

United had been linked with several wide options in this summer’s transfer window as well but were unable to capitalise, so in all fairness, their decision of letting Sancho leave was very questionable considering the circumstances the squad was facing as even from a financial standpoint, they are going to make a huge loss on the money they spent on him some years back.
