Napoli pushing to sign Manchester United star Scott McTominay
Manchester United are moving quickly on selling players as the summer transfer window draws close, with a high-profile sale contingent on signing top midfield target Paris Saint-Germain’s Manuel Ugarte.
Facundo Pellistri’s move to Greek side Panathinaikos is expected to be confirmed before the end of the week, while Championship outfit Cardiff City are targeting young defender Will Fish. Jadon Sancho’s future at Old Trafford also needs resolving amid interest from PSG and Borussia Dortmund.
The Manchester United squad will look a lot different at the end of the window. Another player that could depart Old Trafford before the window slams shut is Scott McTominay.
According to reliable Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla, Napoli boss Antonio Conte has made the signing of Man United midfielder Scott McTominay a ‘priority’. There are continuous contacts between Napoli and Man United to find a solution for the Scottish star, who could be available in the north of €20 million plus bonuses this summer.
McTominay has entered the final year of his contract at Man United (Transfermarkt), although the club has the option to extend it for a further 12 months. A product of Man United’s youth academy, the 27-year-old has made over 250 appearances across all competitions since making his first-team debut in 2017. He has emerged as a cult hero for the club over the past season with late game deciding goals.
Fulham had shown significant interest in signing the central midfielder since last month, and it is believed they were close to wrapping up a deal permanently. However, the aforementioned report claims McTominay has rejected two offers in the last few days, especially one from Fulham, which has forced the west London side to shift their focus towards Burnley’s Sander Berge.
The Cottagers moving out of the race to sign McTominay has left Napoli with a free field to graze. Napoli, who were shocked by Hellas Verona in their opening game of the 2024/25 Serie A season, are pushing to bring the Red Devils star to Naples.

Selling McTominay would result in pure profit in Man United’s accounts as he is an academy product while potentially helping to land Ugarte from PSG. It is clear that the Scotland international is behind the likes of Casemiro, Kobbie Mainoo, Mason Mount and Bruno Fernandes in the pecking order under Erik ten Hag, despite enjoying his best-ever goal return for the Red Devils last season—scoring 10 times.
Things appear to be moving quickly behind the scenes with Napoli having shown concrete interest since last week to bag McTominay’s signature.
