Manchester United’s midfield department has failed to rise up to the standards in the last season under Erik ten Hag. Captain Bruno Fernandes and young English midfielder Kobbie Mainoo were the only players to perform consistently in the middle of the park.
Casemiro, who was signed two summers ago, lost form and consistency last season, and the Brazilian midfielder rarely looked fit to last 90 minutes and was moved out of position in multiple games for United. The Scottish midfielder Scott McTominay also failed to have consistent performances for the club, and he also made multiple errors in the middle of the park.
Captain Bruno remained as a mainstay for the club last season. The Portuguese midfielder also helped the club by scoring 15 goals along with 13 assists in 48 appearances in the last campaign. The arrival of Kobbie Mainoo into the first team after his lengthy injury gave Manchester United’s midfield a huge uplift. The Englishman has shown an incredible technical and tactical level to his game and also impressed the fans with his stellar performances.
United would make some major changes in the midfield department for the upcoming campaign and they have also linked with multiple players in the summer. United are gearing up to offload some experienced players from the midfield department to strengthen the squad for the new season.
United lowered Scott McTominay’s asking price
Manchester United are set to offload experienced midfielder Scott McTominay in the summer, and currently, the club has lowered his asking price to £25m. Fulham is leading in the race for the Scottish international, and clubs like Everton, Brentford, Napoli, Galatasaray and Fenerbahce are also interested in signing him from United, per The Athletic.
The United academy graduate failed to make an impact in the club last year despite scoring 10 goals and three assists from 43 games across all competitions for the Red Devils in last season. He is currently entering his final 12 months with the club (Transfermarkt), and United are keen on selling him in the summer.
As per Independent, United was expecting £30m for his service and the club is currently lowering their asking price to £25m. The Red Devils have already turned down three bids by Fulham as they haven’t reached the expected price.
Erik ten Hag may not be worried about his departure as the manager is set to assign Mainoo as a key midfielder in the United squad for the upcoming season along with Bruno and Mason Mount. The young midfielder also had a decent performance under Gareth Southgate for the England national team in Euro 2024.
