Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has tried captain Bruno Fernandes as a striker option for the Community Shield match against Manchester City on Saturday. United’s primary striker, Rasmus Hojlund, suffered an injury during the pre-season match against Arsenal in the USA. The Danish international will only join the club after six weeks of rest.
Ten Hag has struggled in the front line to score goals without a proper striker in the Community Shield match. Despite making a number of moves to the opposite box, United players failed to convert multiple chances. Argentine international Alejandro Garnacho, who came off the bench in the final minutes, scored the only goal for the Red Devils in the match.
United signed young striker Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna in the summer, but the Dutch international has joined the club lately following his holiday after the Euro campaign. Despite including Zirkzee in the squad, Ten Hag hasn’t used his new addition against Pep Guardiola’s side.
The tactician needs to bolster the attacking line as they will miss the service of Hojlund for the opening matches, and Ten Hag may also add strikers to the squad in the summer for the new season.
United for Evan Ferguson
Manchester United have offered a late £50m bid for Brighton striker Evan Ferguson. The Red Devils are set to bolster the attacking line for the upcoming season with one more striker in the squad, per Mirror. The teenage striker received a glowing performance from Roberto de Zerbi after a hattrick against Newcastle United
“His improvement is important for him, for us, for his career because he’s working to complete his qualities, not only score, because he can become big, big, big. His qualities are enough to become a great player, one of the top scorers in Europe. He’s (born in) 2004. I don’t know how many young players like Evan they score these goals in their careers.”
Erik ten Hag is set to land another striker for the club after Rasmus Hojlund picked up an injury on the pre-season tour. The Danish international will miss the opening games for United, and the tactician is eyeing Ferguson as a replacement option for Hojlund.
The Irish international has scored six goals and an assist in 36 appearances across all competitions for Brighton last season. The teenage striker has also established himself as one of the most promising young strikers in the English top-flight league with his performance in the past seasons.
United has offered an initial bid for the 19-year-old striker, and the club would also focus on young, experienced strikers in the transfer market to strengthen the attacking line. The Dutch manager might use Ferguson as a primary option in the number nine position until Hojlund’s return or Ten Hag would use the Irish forward as a second striker by assigning Zirkzee to the striker position in the opening matches for United.
