Manchester United remain interested in Dominic Calvert-Lewin
Manchester United purchased Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna as Erik ten Hag added a very important back-up for Rasmus Hojlund, crucially after Anthony Martial left at the end of last summer and Marcus Rashford also proved ineffective in front of goal for much of 2023/24.
Hojlund is already injured and could miss up to six weeks of action, which has already opened the door for Zirkzee to play his first official minutes for the team. He started in their FA Community Shield defeat at Manchester City’s hands.
United are reportedly not done with business so far in the attacking third with Sky Sports (via Manchester Evening News) claiming that they are interested in Everton marksman Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
The striker is in the final year of his contract at Goodison Park and having not shown a desire towards renewing his terms with the Toffees, they are obliged to sell him this summer in order to avoid losing him for free in 2025.
A price tag for Calvert-Lewin has not been mentioned so far, but he is seen as a cheaper alternative to Brentford star Ivan Toney and with his contractual situation in mind, he will very comfortably be within United’s affordability.
However, any new arrival at Old Trafford is subject to whether or not the club can make sales beforehand. Moreover, it is debatable whether Ten Hag still requires a centre-forward after his investment in Zirkzee.
Hojlund’s injury is also not very serious and he will be back to the fray in no time. In the meantime, Zirkzee can play as the striker while Rashford could also step into the role if the need for a backup genuinely arises.
A central midfielder has been on the Manchester United radar and should remain their priority until the transfer window draws to a close. However, with Casemiro staying put and Ten Hag also welcoming the Brazilian’s continuity in the first-team, it remains to be seen if indeed a fresh face in the engine room does walk in through the Old Trafford door.

Either way, Man United have exceeded expectations in the summer transfer window in the overall picture. They have signed Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee, as well as are closing out deals for Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui, which should ensure that they do significantly better in the Premier League than they did last season.
