Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag backed Mason Mount to prove his worth at the club in the new season. United will face bitter rivals Manchester City in the Community Shield game on Saturday which will commence the new season.
The Red Devils are still going through shuffles in the transfer market to assemble a squad that can fulfil expectations. Ten Hag’s men struggled with inconsistency and a severe injury crisis last season and failed to qualify for the Champions League.
However, United managed to beat Man City in the FA Cup final to end the season with an important trophy. They intend to build upon the success by strengthening their squad while players like Mount need to prove their worth.
The 25-year-old joined United from Chelsea last summer to bolster the midfield with the qualities that Ten Hag’s team lacked. The Red Devils paid £55 million plus £5 million in add-ons to sign the England international from their London rivals.
Ten Hag deployed Mount in the deep role to exploit his energy, playmaking skills and ball-carrying ability from the midfield. However, Mount struggled with performance and suffered from recurring injuries throughout the season which proved costly for the Red Devils.
Speaking to the media (via Fabrizio Romano’s official X account), Ten Hag accepted that Mount had “a very bad season”. He said:
“We know he’s a high-class player and just bringing skills in. Last season, he had a very bad season, a very tough season for him because of all the injuries, and now we are very pleased he had a good pre-season. I’m sure he can do great”.

Given Mount’s vast experience in the Premier League during his time at Chelsea, the Englishman needs to prove his worth. United have struggled immensely in midfield and they are actively looking to sign a number-six to play alongside Kobbie Mainoo.

Mount needs to make the most of the opportunities that he will get during the course of the next season. United cannot afford to have another player with high wages fail and stay on the bench as he would either succeed or they will sell him to cover their losses.
