Manchester United to relaunch improved bid for Matthijs de Ligt

Former Manchester United assistant coach Rene Meulensteen claims Matthijs de Ligt is a good option for the Red Devils to bolster the backline. The Bayern Munich defender has been linked with United for a move and also agreed to personal terms with the club. Erik ten Hag has also linked with multiple players in the summer to bolster the squad, per Manchester Evening News.

Ten Hag is interested in reuniting with De Ligt at Old Trafford in the summer and the Red Devils are currently working on the deal. The 24-year-old defender has previous experience playing under Ten Hag at Dutch club Ajax. He is one of the favourite defenders of the Dutch manager, and he also became the youngest captain for Ajax under Ten Hag and led the club to the Champions League semifinal. He has scored eight goals and provided five assists in 70 games under the Dutch tactician.

The Dutch international joined Bayern Munich following his spell with Italian giants Juventus. The young stopper-back failed to make an impact in the German club with his performance. He has scored five goals and two assists in 73 matches for the Bavarians. The Dutch defender has a contract until 2027 with the German giants and Bayern Munich are set to offload the player in the summer.

The Red Devils are currently set to launch an improved bid for the stopper-back after having multiple bids rejected by the German club. United ex-assistant gaffer Muelensteen has claimed that the Dutch defender is a suitable player for the Premier League and also warned that he may not be good enough on the ball.

“Matthijs de Ligt can reach his potential in the Premier League, he is a player who suits the division, He is strong, powerful and it helps that Erik ten Hag knows him. De Ligt was flying at Ajax when Ten Hag was there and he was one of the best players in Holland. I think the move to Juventus didn’t quite work and his career stalled at Bayern Munich because they might not think he is good enough on the ball. But United need strengthening and he will do that at centre-back.”

Manchester United surprised their fans by signing young French defender Leny Yoro from Lille in the summer, but unfortunately, the stopper-back has picked up an injury during the pre-season tour and he will not be available for three months.

United’s backline is running out of options as Raphael Varane and Willy Kambwala have left the club in the summer. The Red Devils will kickstart their new campaign with the Community Shield match against Manchester City on Saturday.
