Manchester United have to accept Bayern Munich’s demand for Matthijs de Ligt as Max Eberl declared his support for the player
Bayern Munich boss Max Eberl declared support for Matthijs de Ligt despite demanding a huge price for him from Manchester United. United are actively assessing the transfer market to bolster their defence department after their struggles during the last season.
The Red Devils conceded many casual goals and showed a lot of vulnerability in defence combined with the injury crisis. They replaced Raphael Varane by signing Leny Yoro in a move that received high praise from the fanbase this summer.
United beat Real Madrid to sign Yoro by outspending them and securing the young centre-back with massive potential and a high ceiling. However, the Red Devils must strengthen the defence with more signings this summer.
Eberl told Sky Germany that Matthijs is still a Bayern player and has the full support of the German club. He said:
“I will comment on it (the reasons for the upcoming move to ManUnited) when the time comes. It is not the time yet. Matthijs has played very well here for two years, and that’s why many fans like him. Nevertheless, you have to think about how you make decisions and also how the boy feels. He is still a player of FC Bayern. And as long as he is, he will get all our support.“
According to Sky reporter Florian Plettenberg, Bayern are demanding €50 million plus bonuses for the Dutch centre-back. De Ligt’s price combined with the wages would take a big chunk out of United’s finances with more signings required.

The Red Devils have faced issues with the Financial Fair Play rule, restricting them to loan deals late last summer. They signed Sofian Amrabat and Sergio Reguilon on two separate loan deals to adhere to the FFP rules.

The situation leaves United with critical decisions as we near the beginning of the new season. Yoro’s injury adds pressure to the situation, but the Red Devils hierarchy remains unconcerned. De Ligt fits the profile that United desires but his injury issues are a big concern for the side that has suffered from an injury crisis.
