Manchester United targets surprise midfield alternative amid transfer struggles

Joey Veerman and Manuel Ugarte

Manchester United could sign PSV Eindhoven midfielder Joey Veerman if Paris Saint-Germain continues their hard negotiation for midfielder Manuel Ugarte

Manchester United have earmarked PSV Eindhoven midfielder Joe Veerman as an alternative to Paris Saint-German midfielder Manuel Ugarte this summer. Despite their willingness to sell Ugarte, PSG have made it increasingly hard for the Red Devils to finalise the deal.

United want to sign a player who can play alongside their rising star Kobbie Mainoo as their squad reshapes itself. The future of Casemiro and Scott McTominay is currently uncertain with several clubs wanting to sign them, potentially creating gaps.

The Red Devils struggled to secure the spaces between the midfield and the defence last season due to poor performances. Opponents exploited those spaces and channels to continuously haunt United as the dire need for a number six became evident.

The Red Devils excited the fanbase when their desire to sign Ugarte became public as he fits the profile needed. Ugarte is a combative defensive midfielder who focuses more on the defensive aspect of the game, shielding the defence efficiently.

The Uruguayan international would be a perfect partner to Mainoo, who enjoys drifting forward and influencing the game in offence. According to Fichajes, Man United are struggling to finalize a deal for Ugarte and have Veerman as the viable alternative.

Player analysis: Joey Veerman

Standing at 1.85 metres, Veerman has a very different profile from Ugarte and is much closer to Mainoo’s playing style. The 25-year-old has played dominantly as a left-sided central midfielder with the freedom to influence both offensive and defensive phases.

The Netherlands international uses his right foot to dictate the play and the tempo of the game with accurate passes. Veerman lacks influence in the defensive aspect of the game compared to Ugarte who is more physical and proactive.

However, the Dutchman made an immense contribution to his club in terms of goals and assists, enjoying the freedom to advance. The 25-year-old made 41 appearances for PSV in all competitions, contributing with seven goals and providing 19 assists last season.

United fans might worry after seeing him during Euro 2024. He failed to physically match his opposition, leading to his early substitution by Xavi Simons in the first half against Austria. Nevertheless, the situation does not fully portray the immense quality that Veerman possesses but it depends on the kind of player United want as a partner for Mainoo.
