Manchester United set to make a bold move to fix left-back crisis

Manchester United wants Chelsea star Ben Chilwell to fix their perennial left-back problems before the new season begins in August

Manchester United targets Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell for a summer transfer to strengthen their injury-prone defence. The Red Devils faced a recurring issue at the left side of the defence last season which created constant problems.

Tyrell Malacia is missing from action since the end of the 2022-23 season with two more months remaining on the sideline. United’s main left-back Luke Shaw has suffered from recurring injuries throughout the last season making him unreliable in the long run.

Last season, United signed Sergio Reguilon on a loan deal from Tottenham Hotspur but abruptly ended the deal in January. The Red Devils cannot go into the next season with so much turmoil in their defence department, repeating past mistakes.

According to talkSPORT (via Manchester World), United want Chelsea left-back Chilwell to bolster their defence with his well-proven qualities. Transfermarkt values the 27-year-old at around £24 million, a good price for a proven fullback.

Chilwell has enjoyed a mixed career at Chelsea since joining from Leicester City, helping them win the UEFA Champions League 2020-21. The England international maintained the first-choice status despite Chelsea buying numerous fullbacks in the past few transfer windows.

Chilwell suffered from recurring injuries like Shaw that hampered his chance to represent England consistently and fulfil his immense potential. The problems escalated as Chelsea struggled with form despite spending more than a billion in the last two seasons.
