Manchester United eye De Ligt alternative with £84m release clause in current contract

Man Utd look to steal Antonio Silva from Benfica

Manchester United have already landed one high-potential defender in Leny Yoro earlier this summer, and they are looking to bring another quality prospect into the heart of defence as they look to sign Benfica’s Antonio Silva, per The Express.

Man United have been looking to bring in some big-name defenders all summer, and they already have established links with a few. Everton defender Jarrod Branthwaite was a potential target for Erik ten Hag’s men, albeit he was deemed too expensive by the club owing to the £80m price tag attached to him by the Merseyside club. Alongside the one-capped England international, Dutch star Matthijs de Ligt was also regarded as a priority target at Old Trafford, and the club couldn’t come to terms for transfer fees for the former Ajax star as well.

Now Man United are looking to add more depth to the position, and they have identified Benfica defender Antonio Silva as a potential target for the role.

Can Man Utd snare Silva for less than £84m?

Ten Hag keen on Silva amid defensive overhaul

Silva has been at SL Benfica since 2016 and has swiftly progressed through the academy at the Portuguese side before eventually making a senior team vow for them. He has already turned up for Benfica over 100 times and has contributed to seven goals in the process.

Antonio Silva is also a regular in the Portuguese senior side and has already made 13 appearances for Roberto Martinez’s men.

His exploits on domestic and international levels haven’t gone unnoticed, with some of Europe’s most elite clubs looking to snap his signatures. There have been links with the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool already.

However, as of now, Old Trafford looks like his most likely destination.

The 20-year-old is one of the most sought-after defenders in Europe at the moment, and Portuguese outlet O Jogo claims that the club is eyeing a discounted deal for the 2003-born starlet.

Antonio Silva has a £84 million release clause in his current contract at Benfica, but the officials at the Premier League giants are convinced that they could potentially negotiate the price down with the Portuguese club, possibly even bringing the potential fee to half of that price.
