Manchester United target Joao Neves is closing on signing PSG
Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano confirms that Manchester United target Portuguese midfielder Joao Neves is set to join Paris Saint-Germain this summer. United had their eyes on Neves for the past six months, and Premier League rivals Arsenal also attempted to sign the youngster from Benfica.
United’s dream of signing the teenage midfielder this summer has been dashed by the French giants. Neves impressed in Liga Portugal with Benfica last season, scoring three goals and providing two assists in 54 games for the Portuguese side. The young midfielder developed through the Benfica academy and became a mainstay in the club in 2022.
His dazzling performances also paved the way for his inclusion in the national team for the Euro campaign. The teenager played two games for the Portuguese national side under Roberto Martinez. Neves thrived for both club and country with his defensive moves in the middle of the park. The natural defensive midfielder also plays as a central midfielder when needed.
With four years left on his contract with his boyhood club, Neves attracted interest from multiple clubs across Europe. Romano confirmed last Friday that the teenager is all set to join the French giants in the coming days.
United lost their potential midfield target
Manchester United had a strong interest in the Portuguese youngster, and his move to PSG is a significant blow for the club this summer. Erik ten Hag, preparing for his third season with the Red Devils, has started reinforcing the squad.
United need to bolster their midfield before the new campaign, as they plan to offload their only defensive midfielder, Casemiro, this summer. The club is also considering bids for experienced Scott McTominay. Despite these potential exits, the Red Devils must sign a new defensive midfielder.
