Manchester United are considering a summer swoop for Marcos Alonso

According to The Mirror, Spanish left-back Marcos Alonso is one of three players that have recently emerged as Manchester United targets, the other two being Feyenoord’s David Hancko and Crystal Palace’s Tyrick Mitchell.

The 33-year-old has recently become a free agent, having left Barcelona after two years at the end of last season, where he had a 6.25m-per-year contract.

United are looking at options at left-back because both current options, Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, have demonstrated long-term injury proneness, which became a big issue last season.

Alonso is well-known in English football for his six-year stint at Chelsea, during which time he won the Premier League, the Europa League, and the Champions League, though he has also played for Sunderland and Bolton Wanderers.

A Real Madrid academy graduate, Alonso won La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup during his time at the Spotify Camp Nou.

Alonso won’t be the worst deal

Marcos Alonso is a multi-faceted defender. Good on the ball and adept in attacking situations, he was being utilised by Xavi at Barcelona at centre-back, having also the ability to play left-back, left-wingback, and left-mid.

Manchester United are considering a summer swoop for Marcos Alonso.
Alonso’s Premier League record: 179 games, 26 goals, 16 assists, 63 clean sheets.

Keeping these things in mind, and his Premier League pedigree, it makes sense for United to offer him a short-term deal, not unlike the one they gave to Jonny Evans last summer.

United already have in-prime players in the positions Alonso is capable of occupying, though their availability was questionable at best last season, so it’s prudent for the Red Devils to be looking for a well-rounded short-term solution this summer.
