Harry Maguire confirms he is part of Manchester United’s future, wants to fight for big trophies
English defender Harry Maguire insists that he has a future at Manchester United and wants to win trophies in the upcoming 2024/25 season.
New co-owners INEOS were widely expected to sack Erik ten Hag after finishing eighth in the Premier League last term, but the Dutchman was instead handed a contract extension until 2026 after guiding Manchester United to an FA Cup final victory over neighbours Manchester City. Harry Maguire wasn’t a part of the squad that won the FA Cup trophy in May due to injury, which unfortunately also led to him being omitted from the England squad for the Euro 2024 in Germany.
The England international, who was heavily linked with a move to West Ham United last summer, had a tough 2023/24 campaign. Injury problems didn’t give the defender a chance to establish himself in Erik ten Hag’s first XI, thereby, limiting him to just 22 Premier League outings.
Now back fit and raring to go in the upcoming US pre-season tour, Maguire revealed that he has been assured of his role by INEOS and dismissed any doubts about his commitment to Manchester United following speculation that he could be moved on this summer.
“Unless the club tell me I’m up for sale or I’m not wanted there anymore,” Maguire stated bullishly in an interview with Sky Sports.
“Everything I’ve heard and the action I’ve been shown from the club, I’m part of the future and it is time to crack on and make this club successful again, challenging for the big trophies.
“That’s what this club demands.”
The Red Devils have splashed big bucks to sign Leny Yoro from LOSC Lille earlier this month. One of the best defensive prospects in world football, Yoro will be expected to walk straight into Ten Hag’s starting XI and partner Lisandro Martinez in central defence.
In addition to signing the young Frenchman, INEOS remain in the market for another central defence amid links with Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite and Bayern Munich’s Matthijs de Ligt. Should either one of Branthwaite or De Ligt arrive—potentially the chances of the latter are higher as Man United remain in talks with Bayern—Maguire would slip further down the pecking order under Ten Hag.

Going by Maguire’s defiant interview, however, he remains committed to the club and will want to fight for his place in Ten Hag’s side. As Raphael Varane has been released, the England international is now among the senior members of the squad and his experience will be hugely beneficial for our club in the upcoming season.
We can only hope the 31-year-old stays fit and performs to the best of his ability, helping us win more silverware.
