Manchester United are still keen on securing Matthijs de Ligt from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are not willing to pay the price asked by the German giants to secure Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt. The former Ajax player is waiting to reunite with Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford. United may restructure the deal to pursue the Bayern defender, per Give Me Sport.
The 24-year-old Dutch defender is keen on joining the Red Devils this summer. After joining Bayern in the summer of 2022, the young defender has struggled to make an impact on the pitch for the Bavarians. He has played 73 games for the German side, scoring five goals and contributing two assists in his two-year journey.
The Ajax product also missed many matches in the last campaign due to recurring injuries and failed to give his best for the club. He only played 30 games for the Bavarians in the last campaign, during which the German giants failed to win the Bundesliga title after 11 years. He also failed to make an appearance for his national side in Euro 2024.
Despite his underwhelming performances last season, United have shown interest in signing the defender from Bayern Munich. Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag has immense trust in the defender, having previously worked with him at Ajax. The Dutch gaffer’s initial attempt to sign his compatriot failed after Bayern rejected the deal submitted by United.
The Bavarians are asking £50m for the Dutch defender’s services, and the Red Devils have confirmed that they are not willing to pay such a huge amount for the potential target. Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the Dutch defender is waiting for United this summer.
“Man United have an agreement with Matthijs de Ligt, but outgoings are crucial, and at the moment, Man United will never agree to pay 50 million euros in one solution or with no add-ons.”
“Man United always wanted to include add-ons as part of the negotiation with Bayern, and this is why the situation remains open. Man United are not paying €50m guaranteed so have to change the structure of the deal. Meanwhile, Matthijs de Ligt is waiting.”
United need to restructure the deal
Manchester United have started to bolster their backline for the upcoming season and they beat the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid to sign Leny Yoro from Lille last week. The addition of the young defender has boosted the confidence of the club, and they are currently seeking another centre-back this summer.
United have lost their French defender Raphael Varane and Willy Kwambala from their backline, and Victor Lindelof will also potentially move from the club. So, the Red Devils need to find replacements for them in the backline and reinforce the defence ahead of the new season. After spending over £75 million on purchasing Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee, Ten Hag will need to make a few sales before he can bring in fresh faces, including De Ligt.
