Man United unwilling to meet Bayern Munich’s price tag for Matthijs de Ligt
According to Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United are not willing to meet the price tag Bayern Munich have put up for their Dutch centre-back Matthijs de Ligt.
The Bavarian giants have already rejected United’s initial €35m bid, though they are unlikely to get the €50 million they are after.
Romano explained the situation recently:
“Man United have an agreement with Matthijs de Ligt, but outgoings are crucial, and at the moment, Man United will never agree to pay 50 million euros in one solution or with no add-ons.
“Man United always wanted to include add-ons as part of the negotiation with Bayern, and this is why the situation remains open. Man United are not paying €50m guaranteed so have to change the structure of the deal. Meanwhile, Matthijs de Ligt is waiting.”
Romano, as quoted by Football365.
De Ligt has been on United’s radar ever since his Ajax days, when he emerged as one of the most promising teenage prospects in Europe under Erik ten Hag.
However, the Netherlands international has failed to live up to the hype since leaving Amsterdam five years ago, having offered only fleeting moments of brilliance. He was moved on by Juventus to Bayern two summers ago for €67 million, and the latter are already all too happy to let him leave, albeit for the right price.
Last season was an injury-stricken one for De Ligt as he managed to make just 30 appearances across all competitions. His €16m-per-year contract at Bayern is set to run until June 2027.
Will this summer be a positive header for a new United chapter?
The new United sporting hierarchy have already demonstrated that they are tuning a new leaf given the speed with which they secured the moves of Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro.
They are now demonstrating in another way that they are different from the past setups by standing firm on their stance and not willing to give in to whatever demand the other team make of them. The United of previous years would have eventually given in to Bayern’s demands.

Whether the current regime follows up on that remains to be seen. More likely, we will see the two parties trying to meet each other halfway in the coming days.
