Uli Hoeness drops hint on De Ligt’s potential transfer to Manchester United
Manchester United beat the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid to sign Leny Yoro from Lille last week. The French teenager’s arrival has not seen them cool interest in Matthijs de Ligt as Bayern Munich’s honorary president Uli Hoeness hinted at the Dutchman’s exit for England.
The 72-year-old was quoted as saying the following by Metro.
‘It’s possible that a defender will leave. De Ligt is Dutch, the coach at Manchester United is Dutch. I would have no problem if he stays. Personally, I would not sell [Dayot] Upamecano.’
De Ligt has been linked with leaving the Allianz Arena for many weeks but his transfer to Manchester United was placed on hold due to Yoro agreeing to join the club.
A deal for the former Ajax Amsterdam captain has not progressed since Yoro’s transfer as Manchester United now has enough bargaining power to execute any purchase on their terms, Give Me Sport claims.
After spending over £75 million on purchasing Yoro and Zirkzee, Ten Hag will need to make a few sales before he can bring in fresher faces, De Ligt included.
The United coach did however confirm the club’s interest in his compatriot, though he maintained that it has not come as a result of his influence. Recently, he said:
‘It remains to be seen whether De Ligt will come. I know Matthijs well and I will not deny that. I wanted to sign him two years ago but at that time he was already very far along to join Bayern Munich but believe it or not, his name did not come from me in the process [at United].’
Although Uli Hoeness has directly hinted that Old Trafford may be Matthijs de Ligt’s next destination, any recruitment at the moment seems to be coming with its hindrances.
The Red Devils have not yet made any significant sale this summer, barring that of Mason Greenwood, though things could change sooner rather than later.
Bayern Munich will also not be ready to receive a lower fee for De Ligt as they are under no pressure to get rid of him and Vincent Kompany would be more than happy to have him in his squad for next season.

Yoro’s signing has given United an increased amount of bargaining power and though they may have arguably overspent on the teenager, it has prevented them from spending money on a player who has regressed in recent years if compared to his days at Ajax Amsterdam or Juventus.
