Manchester United joined the race for Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad
Manchester United are set to join the race for Spanish midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad. The Spaniard recently had an impressive journey with the national side, winning the Euro Championship in Germany. Barcelona and Arsenal have kept an eye out on the Real Sociedad midfielder, per Football Espana.
The 25-year-old midfielder played a significant role in the Euroa final for Spain against England. Spanish manager Luis de la Fuente was forced to sub off the player of the tournament award winner Rodri, in the second half and he replaced the midfielder with Zubimendi. He has carried the midfield duties on his shoulder till the final whistle and he also destroyed England’s attacking moves in the middle of the park.
His impressive stint with his boyhood club has paved the way to the Euro squad. He signed his professional contract with the club in 2020 and since that time, he has been one of the mainstays in the Spanish club. The midfielder has appeared in 188 games for his boyhood club.
He has a contract until 2027 with the club and his price stock went up after winning the Euro title with the Spanish national team. When clubs like Barcelona, Arsenal, and Manchester United come calling, it is very difficult for a player to reject such approaches. Hence, it will be a huge surprise if Zubimendi chooses to remain with Real Sociedad for the next season.
The future of the midfield?
Erik ten Hag has to prove his ability at Old Trafford by taking the Red Devils into the top four in the upcoming season and he has started his preparation for that.
Ten Hag needs to bolster the squad ahead of the season and the Dutch manager has only one natural defensive-midfielder in the squad, and that is Brazilian ace Casemiro. United star Scott McTominay also can do a job when called upon.
Casemiro has missed a major part of the season due to injury and ten Hag struggled in the midfield during the phase and the Brazilian might not have many years left at the top of the game. So the manager is considering Zubimendi as an option for the veteran Brazilian midfielder.
