Manchester United unwilling to match Bayern Munich’s asking price for Matthijs de Ligt
Manchester United have held an interest in purchasing Bayern Munich’s centre-back Matthijs de Ligt with the player also keen on joining the Red Devils to reunite with former coach, Erik ten Hag.
The Dutchman’s transfer, however, is currently paused as Man United were in the midst of wrapping up a deal for Leny Yoro from Lille.
Give Me Sport has reported that United’s bargaining power has grown due to Yoro’s signing and thus, they are no longer willing to meet Bayern Munich’s asking price of €50 million for De Ligt.
He was hailed as the ‘best defender in Serie A’ by ex-Juventus player Sergio Brio, who said:
“De Ligt is the best defender in Serie A, and I honestly can’t share the opinion of the great Van Basten. In Italy he has grown a lot and is still developing.”
The former Ajax Amsterdam captain remains a world-class defender at the Allianz Arena and Bayern Munich might even be ready to keep him if their demands are not met.
The need to bring in a central defender has been substantially reduced at Manchester United as Erik ten Hag will have Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans, Leny Yoro, Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof at his disposal.
It remains to be seen whether United will look to negotiate a lower price for De Ligt with Bayern Munich or are ready to hit the pause button on their bid to bring him in this summer.
The report adds that Victor Lindelof’s potential departure, however, could see the Red Devils return to the market for a central defender with Jarrad Branthwaite’s move also under consideration.
