UCL winning club take huge step in quest to sign Mason Greenwood from Manchester United

Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood closes in on a switch to Marseille

Mason Greenwood is set to leave Manchester United this summer as he hopes to reignite his career away from England at a club with relatively less pressure.

Lazio has been linked with his signing some days ago as Marseille and the Ligue 1 side are on the verge of completing a transfer for the 22-year-old, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.

Marseille had offered a fixed transfer fee worth £23.6 million along with £4 million in additional bonuses to Manchester United. Greenwood’s say on the transfer, however, was pending.

The Englishman has now given his green light to join the 1993 Champions League winners with the Red Devils also agreeing verbally to his sale this summer.

The formal procedures to complete the transfer are already in the works and it is only a matter of time before Greenwood travels to France for his medical and contract signing.

The forward’s transfer to Marseille was previously jeopardised due to opposition from the fans as well as the city’s mayor but it looks set to be done anyway, much to Manchester United’s relief.

United will retain a 50% sell-on clause for Greenwood over and above the transfer fees, whereas the former Getafe loanee is expected to pen a contract that runs until June 2029.

Greenwood’s association with the club of late was proving to be a delicate issue and was having its ramifications on the Red Devils’ public image too, so they will be happy that his future has been resolved.

The cash inflow of £23.6 million in fixed proceeds will help the club in rebuilding its other areas of priority, particularly the backline and midfield.

It remains to be seen how much longer Marseille take to wrap up Greenwood’s signing but it could happen within the next few days as they would expect him to be available for pre-season.
