Manchester United win the race to sign Leny Yoro
Manchester United are set to sign Leny Yoro after the teenager agreed to join them, after initially showing hesitance and holding out for a transfer to Real Madrid.
The Red Devils had agreed on a transfer fee with Lille last week, amounting to €50 million in fixed fees and €12 million more in add-ons but were encountering difficulties in finalising the deal.
It seemed like Yoro would continue to wait for Real Madrid, but in an unexpected twist, he flew to Manchester on Wednesday to discuss personal terms as well as to pass his medical.
Fabrizio Romano has now reported that the transfer is all but confirmed with the central defender needing to pass another set of tests before signing his contract until June 2029.
It is fair to say that the serious business in the transfer window has gotten underway for Manchester United, who have followed up Joshua Zirkzee’s signing with that of Leny Yoro.
Yoro’s transfer particularly is a major statement by INEOS as they beat Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid to the teenager’s signing despite United not playing the Champions League next season.
While it is debatable that they may have overpaid for a player in the last year of his contract, United’s need to bring in a centre-back was desperate and only time will tell if the amount spent is justified.
As a result of Yoro’s capture, Manchester United are also better placed now to dictate terms for Matthijs de Ligt’s signing from Bayern Munich as his purchase is no longer a major necessity.
While Bayern are open to selling the Dutchman and he too wants to move to Old Trafford, the club are prepared to walk away from the deal if the financial demands of either party become untenable.
Very importantly for Erik ten Hag, Leny Yoro will be available for pre-season and barring any unforeseen problems, he will be ready for the FA Community Shield on August 10th.
