Manchester United no longer keen on PL marksman after Joshua Zirkzee's signing

Manchester United’s interest in Ivan Toney set to end following Joshua Zirkzee’s arrival

Manchester United confirmed Joshua Zirkzee’s arrival from Bologna in a transfer said to be worth approximately £26 million.

The Dutchman is currently on holiday and missed the club’s first pre-season friendly of the season, a 1-0 defeat to Norwegian outfit Rosenborg, but is expected to return to the fore early in August.

Zirkzee’s signing will provide fresh competition to Rasmus Hojlund in attack in what is a particularly vital transfer for the Red Devils. They faced troubles in front of goal last season due to the Dane’s inconsistent form, coupled with Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford also failing to fire.

Erik ten Hag will be especially pleased with his compatriot’s signing as a key area in the squad is now well looked after. It also implies that Manchester United will shun a move for Brenford’s Ivan Toney, as per Manchester Evening News.

The English international’s transfer would have cost close to £40 million but more importantly, his need has become redundant at Old Trafford, where there are two world-class strikers available.

A switch for Toney to Old Trafford at this point in time would have its adversities on the club’s plans for the transfer window and jeopardise other necessary signings.

United’s interest has now turned towards bringing in a central defender now with the club linked with the likes of Jarrad Branthwaite, Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro in recent weeks.

As far as the offensive department goes, it should not come as a surprise if Manchester United start to look for a winger as well, as both Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood are likely to be sold.

It also remains to be seen what role Rashford plays in the team in the upcoming season as he was far below the standard in 2023/24 and as a result, was also excluded from England’s Euro 2024 squad.
