Manchester United star Kobbie Mainoo is in line for a lucrative new deal
According to HITC (h/t The Sun), Manchester United are planning to reward star midfielder Kobbie Mainoo with a new lucrative contract.
New sporting director Dan Ashworth, having only arrived at the club from Newcastle United, has wasted no time getting to work. The Englishman, along with short-term technical director Christopher Vivell, are working hard behind the scenes to bolster the squad ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.
With forward Joshua Zirkzee closing in on a move to Old Trafford from Bologna and talks continuing with Bayern Munich over the signing of highly-rated defender Matthijs de Ligt, tying Kobbie Mainoo down to a new contract has been prioritised by Dan Ashworth.
The teenager’s new deal at Manchester United runs until 2027 (Transfermarkt), but the club are looking to offer him a much-enhanced terms that closely reflects his rise in stature. As per the aforementioned report (h/t The Sun), the Red Devils are hoping to progress in talks over a new deal once the central midfielder is back from the 2024 European Championships.
Mainoo has enjoyed a meteoric rise to fame over the last six months, ever since he recovered from a calf injury and became a part of Erik ten Hag’s side. Having made his first Premier League start in Man United’s 3-0 win over Everton at Goodison Park in November, the teenage sensation went on to enjoy a breakthrough campaign in 2023/24.
He made 32 first-team appearances across all competitions, scoring vital goals against the likes of Wolves, Liverpool, Newcastle United and Manchester City in the FA Cup final. Mainoo’s eye-catching performances for Erik ten Hag’s side earned him his first England cap against Brazil in a friendly in March as well as a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s squad for the Euro 2024.
It took Gareth Southgate some time to realise that the 19-year-old is the right man to partner Declan Rice in the double midfield pivot for England.
After starting each of the Three Lions’ three group games on the bench and coming on in two of them, the Stockport-born talent has started all three knockout games so far in the tournament in Germany. Mainoo has played a crucial role in helping England reach the 2024 Euro final, where Southgate’s side will come up against Spain on Sunday evening.
