Manchester United prepared to cash in on Christian Eriksen this summer
According to a report from The Manchester Evening News, Manchester United are open to listen to offers for Christian Eriksen this summer.
Christian Eriksen joined Manchester United on a free transfer from Brentford in July 2022 and proved to be a key player in Erik ten Hag’s debut season, helping the club finish third in the Premier League and subsequently qualify for the Champions League.
Despite missing more than two months with an ankle injury, the Denmark international made 44 appearances across all competitions in his first season at Old Trafford, contributing two goals and 10 assists. The creative midfielder was limited to only 28 games this past season, with the emergence of academy kid Kobbie Mainoo seeing him drop down the pecking order.
Eriksen, whose contract runs down in 2025, admitted last season he wasn’t happy with his bit-part role at Manchester United. The aforementioned report claims that the 32-year-old, having entered the final 12 months of his deal, falls into the category of players deemed ‘sellable or must-sell’ by the club.
INEOS would listen to offers for Eriksen to fund their summer transfer project, as Erik ten Hag looks to improve his squad for the upcoming campaign.
The 32-year-old midfielder caught the eye at the Euro 2024 in Germany. He was arguably Denmark’s best player in the tournament, operating in an advanced role and stitching play for his team. The Man United star made four appearances and scored a goal as Denmark were beaten 2-0 by Germany in the round of 16.
Performing consistently at the European Championships shows Eriksen still has it in him and can deliver at the highest level. However, he isn’t suited to the style of play Ten Hag wants Man United to play—quick, high-octane and pressing football. The Dane may have the technical qualities and vision to unlock rigid defences but he lacks the physicality and running power required to fit into Ten Hag’s system at the club.

Mainoo, even at a tender age, offers a lot more than Eriksen when it comes to physicality, ground-covering and work rate. Thus, it wasn’t surprising to see the ex-Tottenham Hotspur man lose his spot to Mainoo in the first XI in the 2023/24 campaign.
With Mason Mount now fully fit and waiting to make an impact and INEOS planning to bring in a midfielder, it will be best to cash in on Eriksen and get some funds to boost our transfer kitty.
