Manchester United are set to decide on the future of Moroccan star Sofyan Amrabat next week
According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United are set to make a final decision on the future of Sofyan Amrabat next week.
Sofyan Amrabat joined Manchester United on a season-long loan from Fiorentina on the transfer deadline day last summer. The Premier League club paid £8.5m to take him on loan with an option to make the deal permanent for £21.4m.
After the end of the 2023/24 season, the 27-year-old has returned to Fiorentina following the expiry of his loan spell at Old Trafford. On his official X account, Fabrizio Romano states that Manchester United will make an internal decision soon on the future of Amrabat. The player is planning to leave Fiorentina permanently this summer and is waiting for Man United’s verdict.
“Understand Manchester United are planning to make decision on Sofyan Amrabat next week,” Romano tweeted.
“They’ve still the option to buy Amrabat available but the internal decision will be made soon, next week.
“Amrabat, planning to leave Fiorentina and waiting for Man United.”
Amrabat initially struggled to adapt to the demands of Premier League football and had to operate as a makeshift left-back for Erik ten Hag’s side in the first few games due to injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia. He failed to establish himself in Ten Hag’s first XI, but after gradually acclimatising to the Premier League, the defensive midfielder ended the 2023/24 strongly.
The Morocco international ended up making 30 appearances across all competitions, including his star showing in Man United’s FA Cup final triumph over cross-town rivals Manchester City in May. He produced arguably his best performance in the famous Red, protecting the backline, breaking plenty of opposition’s play and distributing the ball well from the middle of the park.
Regardless of Man United’s decision, the 27-year-old is planning to leave Fiorentina having entered the final 12 months of his contract. He had an excellent 2022 World Cup with Morocco and was not short of suitors back then, and a likewise situation could evolve this summer.
Given that INEOS are willing to listen to offers for Christian Eriksen and Casemiro, the club will be required to replace them adequately in Ten Hag’s squad. In addition to PSG enforcer Manuel Ugarte’s pursuit, the Red Devils certainly will have space for another midfielder if we end up offloading both Eriksen and Casemiro.

Amrabat, in that regard, could be a utility signing at £21.4m. He showed his quality when given a run of games at the back end of last season. The Moroccan will add valuable depth to the squad too, so triggering the buy option would make complete sense.
