Manchester United midfielder nears Girona transfer as Fabrizio Romano provides latest update

Donny van de Beek set for La Liga move

Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek is closing in on a move away from Old Trafford as the Dutch star nears a move to the Spanish league, with Girona interested in landing his signature.

Donny van de Beek moved to Manchester United in a highly anticipated transfer from Ajax in 2020. The transfer was looked at as one for the decade as Donny moved from the Dutch side following his antics for Ajax, taking them to the semi-finals of the Champions League under Erik ten Hag in the 2018-19 season.

However, the four years that followed at Old Trafford were filled with despair for Van de Beek. He has made only 62 appearances for the Manchester Reds in that time and has netted only two goals in his time at the club.

With his struggles to find his form at Carrington, loan deals across Europe followed. He spent the second half of the 2021–22 season at Everton, making only seven appearances for the Merseyside club. In January 2024, the Dutch international moved to Frankfurt in a short-term deal. He played only eight times for the German side and was mostly on the sidelines of the club’s Europa League squad.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano posted an update on the midfielder’s future, stating that personal terms are set to be discussed throughout the week. Taking to X, the Italian journalist wrote:

“The agreement between Girona and Manchester United for Donny van de Beek is based on add-ons. It could go up to €4/5m based on appearances this season, and it could also go higher in the case of more achievements. Permanent deal agreed, but subject to personal terms to be discussed next week.”

The La Liga club is looking at a possible deal where they pay out an initial €500k to land the 27-year-old maestro with an aggregate add-on package of €20m. €5 million of the package is seen as realistically achievable (h/t The Athletic).

Girona has been in the market for a maestro following Alex Garcia’s bid adieu to Estadi Montilivi for pastures at Bayer Leverkusen last month.
