Erik ten Hag all set to lead Manchester United to the top following contract extension
Erik ten Hag has opened up for the first time after signing a new contract at Manchester United. This finally puts to end any speculation regarding his immediate future at the Theatre of Dreams.
The Dutchman was set to be sacked after the FA Cup final in May regardless of the result, though after United’s trophy lift the new INEOS sporting ownership of the club declared that they wanted to carry out an extensive review of the whole 2023/24 season to reach a verdict.
After weeks of deliberation, they decided to stick with Ten Hag and have now added another year to his Old Trafford contract.
“I am very pleased to have reached agreement with the club to continue working together. Looking back at the past two years, we can reflect with pride on two trophies and many examples of progression from where we were when I joined”.
“However, we must also be clear that there is still lots of hard work ahead to reach the levels expected of Manchester United, which means challenging for English and European titles.
“In my discussions with the club, we have found complete unity in our vision for reaching those goals, and we are all strongly committed to making that journey together.”

The onus remains on Ten Hag
The fact that, after all the talks, Ten Hag has only been granted one extra year on his contract further reinforces the perception that INEOS are sticking with him because they have to, not because they want to.
And it makes sense for now. The 2024/25 season is set to be a transitional season for United with all the upheaval going on in the hierarchy upstairs. Ten Hag has all but bought himself some time by winning the FA Cup, allowing the new sporting owners to prolong his stay while they fix our issues elsewhere.
If things continue in the league the way they did in 2023/24, INEOS could always sack Ten Hag midway through the season and get another interim manager in before having to do so right away at the start of the season.
