According to a Daily Mail report, Manchester United are looking at Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin alongside AC Milan and Newcastle United in hopes of landing the England international this summer.

The ever-promising 27-year-old has struggled with injuries for the majority of his career, though he had a relatively injury-free campaign in 2023/24 and played a key role in ensuring that Everton ended their Premier League campaign in a comfortable mid-table position despite sustaining points deductions on two separate occasions.

Calvert-Lewin’s performances last season have prompted big European names to pounce on him while the iron is hot.

Milan are looking for a replacement for Olivier Giroud, who has left for Major League Soccer, while Newcastle are expected to lose Alexander Isak this summer and need someone to pair the injury-prone Callum Wilson with.

United, on the other hand, have bid farewell to Anthony Martial and are looking for a striker to complement Rasmus Højlund in the squad. Everton want a fee in the region of £35 million for Calvert-Lewin, whose £100,000-a-week contract at Goodison Park runs until the end of the 2024/25 season. This is a player United should absolutely pursue this summer.

Calvert-Lewin would complement Rasmus Højlund well

Manchester United already have a vested interest in another Everton player; they have been linked with centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite for weeks and have already had a low-ball bid rejected.

And for good reason. The 21-year-old England international already looks like a complete package and would make an ideal replacement for the outgoing Raphaël Varane.

The Branthwaite saga could stretch on for a while, but United should remain at Everton for shopping further and consider Calvert-Lewin.

Yes, he has missed 97 games for club and country since 2016/17, but his injury-prone tendencies further put him in a position in which he would not halt, but rather support Højlund’s growth at Old Trafford.

The Dane grew into stature towards the second half of this season and may not need too many years nor support from other players to quickly become United’s out-and-out first-choice striker.

In such a case, having a player with unquestionable quality who would be willing to play a reduced number of games in order to sustain his fitness would play wonderfully into United’s hands.

Moreover, with his aerial presence, positional acuity, and link-up play, Calvert-Lewin fits the mould of the kind of striker we have seen Erik ten Hag prefer much more than someone like Joshua Zirkzee, who has also been linked with the club but would make for a less-favourable partner for Højlund for a variety of reasons.

Conclusion

Man United need a forward to complement their young star Rasmus Højlund. Getting in an experienced operator would be the best ay to go about doing this.

To that end, United have identified a fair few names. If their prime targets Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney fail to end up at Old Trafford, they could do a lot worse than Calvert-Lewin.

Because of their recent issues with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules, and given the fact that Calvert-Lewin has only a year left on his contract, Everton may bring down their £35m price tag.

For the right price, just as they aim to land Jarrad Branthwaite, United should also try to convince Calvert-Lewin to move to Manchester this summer.
