Napoli enter the race for Manchester United star Mason Greenwood
According to an iNews report, further shared by the Manchester Evening News, Napoli are monitoring the situation of Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood.
The 22-year-old is expected to leave the club permanently this summer after an attempt to reintegrate him into the first team failed last summer.
The former England international spent the season gone by on loan at Getafe and finished as their player of the season.
Napoli, now under new manager Antonio Conte, are looking to return to the top end of the Serie A table after finishing 10th in the league this season. They are also expected to lose their star forward, Victor Osimhen, whose place Greenwood could take up front for the 2022/23 Serie A champions.
Napoli are not the first Italian club linked with Greenwood this summer. Lazio are also reported to be interested in him, and Juventus only recently retracted their interest.
Greenwood’s £50k-a-week United contract runs out at the end of the 2024/25 season. The Old Trafford club are looking for around £30 million to let him go.
United are reportedly looking to use the money generated from Greenwood’s sale to fund the move for Bologna’s Joshua Zirkzee, with whom they have been heavily linked in recent weeks.
The more, the merrier
Napoli’s interest in Greenwood is absolutely good news for United, who need to get him off their books as soon as possible, even if that means protracted negotiations over the summer that don’t precipitate into the £30 million they are currently looking for.
It is equally important, however, that they do not spend that money on Joshua Zirkzee. He’s not the profile of strikers Erik ten Hag has so far preferred deploying up front.
