According to Argentina outlet TyC Sports, as reported by the Manchester Evening News (MEN), Manchester United are likely to make an official bid for Boca Juniors defender Aaron Anselmino this summer.

The MEN report states that United have already made an initial £14m offer for the 19-year-old.

Born in Bernardo Larroudé, Argentina, in 2005, Anselmino made his senior Boca debut only last year but is already attracting huge interest from Europe.

United are in need of defensive reinforcements on the back of an underwhelming 2023/24 season that saw their performances decline steeply as injuries increased at the back.

With Erik ten Hag confirmed to be staying for now, United have begun looking for reinforcements for both short- and long-term needs; Anselmino clearly fits the bill for the former.

United’s Premier League rivals Chelsea are also interested in Anselmino, whose current contract at Boca Juniors, as per Capology, runs until December 2028.

An interesting swoop

Given United’s evident lack of football-savviness in the past decade, it is hard to fathom where the link for Anselmino comes from. But, this is a club trying to learn from past mistakes and pick up talent before they become hot prospects in Europe.

It’s early days, so we can expect a few hits and misses. It’s also not just finding the right talent, however, and Anselmino is clearly talented; it’s also fostering the right environment for these young talents to then grow.
