Ryan Giggs in contention for Wales job, Craig Bellamy also in talks
According to Herald Wales, Ryan Giggs and Craig Bellamy are being considered by the Football Association of Wales (FAW) as the next Wales men’s national football team manager.
The FAW have been under pressure after a disappointing Euro 2024 qualifying campaign that saw Wales fail to qualify for the ongoing tournament in Germany.
Rob Page, who initially took over from Giggs as Wales manager almost four years ago after the latter was arrested in November 2020 on charges of physical assault against his former partner and her sister, has had his contract terminated, bringing the two former Wales internationals in consideration as his successor.
Giggs, acquitted of the aforementioned charges, is already back in football as the director of football at Salford City, which he also co-owns.
Bellamy, on the other hand, was part of Vincent Kompany’s coaching staff at Burnley most recently before the former Belgium and Man City skipper moved to Germany to become the head coach of Bayern Munich.
Bringing Giggs back sends out the wrong message
The former Man United “legend” was removed from his post as Wales manager once the charges mentioned above surfaced against him. No conviction was needed; the disrepute brought about by the matter alone was sufficient for the FAW to make that call.
Then, why now? Why reintegrate the same man into the same role? This rollback decision sends absolutely the wrong message to the women and girls of Wales and wider footballing society: that their voices will not be heard if they are not backed up by evidence so unignorable that even a man of power in a man’s world can’t do away with it.
Ryan Giggs. Mason Greenwood. United alone have a track record of some examples that many fans wish they didn’t, but then, such is the nature of the society we inhabit.
