Manchester United express an interest in signing Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher

According to Diario AS, Manchester United have joined the transfer race for Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher.

Chelsea must offload players to comply with Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) and UEFA’s Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations this summer, having reportedly made a pre-tax loss of £90.1m in the year to 30 June 2023. This has put several of their players’ futures at the club up in the air.

One of the players the Blues are considering selling this summer is Conor Gallagher. Diario AS claims Atletico Madrid contacted Chelsea and sent an informal offer of just over €20million for the central midfielder, which the London-based club rejected. The Pensioners deem Conor Gallagher surplus to requirements and hope to raise at least €50 million from his sale.

Competitions for the England international’s signature are fierce. Diario AS states Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa, West Ham United and Newcastle United have all asked Chelsea about the midfielder’s situation. While Gallagher loves the club and wants to achieve legendary status at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea will have the final say on his future.

Currently, away at the 2024 European Championships with England, Gallagher was one of Chelsea’s rare bright spots in an otherwise disappointing campaign. He was an undisputed starter for Chelsea under Mauricio Pochettino last season, racking up seven goals and nine assists in 50 games.

With Pochettino sacked, there is speculation surrounding the Englishman’s immediate future at the club under new boss Enzo Maresca. Despite being a regular, however, the Blues may be forced to sell Gallagher to meet the Premier League’s PSR, and as a homegrown player, he will bring pure profit to the club.

Meanwhile, Manchester United’s interest in Gallagher makes sense. The Red Devils endured their worst-ever Premier League finish and, after deciding to keep Erik ten Hag in place as the manager, they are planning to bolster their squad in this transfer window.

Along with missing some of their midfielders with injury, Erik ten Hag’s side was affected by the poor form of Casemiro. While Gallagher isn’t a direct replacement for the ageing Casemiro, the 24-year-old would be a strong addition to Man United’s engine room. At just 24, the England international’s peak years happen to be ahead of him, yet he is already a Premier League-proven commodity.

So, it won’t be surprising if we test Chelsea’s resolve with a cheeky bid for Gallagher.
