Dharmesh Seth explains why Manchester United are still hunting for forwards despite £72m Rasmus Hojlund investment

Man United want to support Rasmus Højlund, says Dharmesh Seth

In a recent appearance on Sky Sports, football expert Dharmesh Seth discussed, among other things, United’s pursuit of strikers this summer.

He had this explanation as to why United were looking to sign strikers this summer despite already having a young and promising forward in Rasmus Højlund, for whom they paid £72 million last summer:

“Last summer, they [Man United] went into the season with Anthony Martial and Rasmus Højlund. Now, Anthony Martial was injured for the majority of the season. Rasmus Højlund was then expected to shoulder the goal-scoring responsiblity for Manchester United. He came from [the] Serie A, didn’t play that many games for Atalanta, and was expected to just hit the ground running.

“Most experts have said that we have seen enough of Højlund this season for United fans to be excited, but United want to help him and complement him as well, so if there’s a time in the season where he’s not hitting form or needs a rest, maybe they could bring someone in.

“Bologna’s Joshua Zirkzee is a player they are looking at. He’s one of many strikers United are looking at.”

Højlund found goals hard to come by in the first half of his debut season at Old Trafford, opening his Premier League account only by December. He had a resurging second half, however, and finished the league campaign with a double-digit goal tally.

Apart from Zirkzee, United have also been linked with the likes of Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins, Brentford’s Ivan Toney, and Lille’s Jonathan David.

Højlund, Zirkzee, Watkins, and Toney are currently in Germany playing in UEFA Euro 2024 for their respective national sides, while David is in the US representing Canada at the 2024 Copa América.

United should go for an experienced forward to support Højlund

Pairing Højlund with another striker makes sense, but it’s important as to which kind of forward United pair him up with.

Zirkzee is a player who, despite being promising, United should avoid; he is not Erik ten Hag’s type and would only hinder Højlund’s progress as well as his own.

David would be a smart signing but he is still young. Going for experienced Premier League operators like Watkins and Toney makes most sense for United this summer.
