Manchester United are interested in Edson Alvarez
It is no secret that Manchester United are interested in signing a midfielder this summer as Casemiro’s departure is only expected to be a matter of time.
The former Real Madrid man has attracted interest from Saudi Arabia but a move to the Middle East is getting delayed as he is currently busy on national duty with Brazil in the Copa America.
With Casemiro’s exit presumed, the Red Devils are plotting a new central midfielder’s signing to partner with Kobbie Mainoo and have recognised West Ham’s Edson Alvarez as a potential signing, according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano.
Man United’s interest in Alvarez is at a very formative stage with Fabrizio Romano adding that his name has only been ‘discussed internally’ so far with no indication that formal talks with either the midfielder or the Hammers have gotten underway.
Erik ten Hag particularly likes the player, who unsurprisingly has a past at Ajax Amsterdam, where the Dutchman previously coached before coming to the Premier League.
Alvarez is regarded as a key fixture at West Ham, however, and a transfer for him would be a difficult proposition. The 26-year-old is valued at only €35 million on Transfermarkt, though any swoop for him may cost significantly more as his contract with his current employer runs until June 2028.
Ten Hag could well be the instigator in Alvarez’s potential signing as he has brought in a number of players formerly associated with Ajax Amsterdam to Old Trafford in his two years at United.
It is debatable whether or not the manager’s personally preferred targets should be signed as he has yet to agree to a contract renewal at the club.
Even while his immediate future may have been clarified, a lacklustre start for Manchester United in the new season could once again put the Dutch manager’s job at risk.

Keeping that in mind, it is perhaps unreasonable for the board to sign a player specifically wanted by Ten Hag given that INEOS are already thinking about limiting the manager’s say in transfer activities.
