Raphaël Varane cheers on for France after their win over Austria in Euro 2024

Raphaël Varane took no time in taking his cheering for France to Instagram after Les Blues beat Austria in their opening game of UEFA Euro 2024.

France won their first game of the Euros 1-0 against Austria in a Group D encounter.

The former France international posted this story on Instagram after the game to celebrate the victory.

It wasn’t an easy game for France by any stretch of the imagination as they struggled against Ralf Rangnick’s men. Maximilian Wöber’s late first-half own goal got them the lead, which they managed to hold on to.

Up next for the 2016 Euros finalists is a major clash against the Netherlands on Friday.

France’s abundance of talent pushed Varane out

Despite his recent performances not being as outstanding as they used to be during his Real Madrid days, Varane could have still made the France squad had he not retired after the 2022 World Cup.

N’Golo Kanté’s performance in the game against Austria shows us exactly how capable the veteran defender could still have been despite a drop in level, but France are just too stacked as far as their defensive options are concerned, and there hardly could have been a better space to leave on a high after making the final of the World Cup just one edition after winning it.

With his contract with Man United ending at the end of this month, Varane should not find it difficult to find himself another club in Europe. It would equally not be too surprising, however, if he were to pick up a hefty paycheck and move to Saudi Arabia.
