Manchester United legend says England were missing what Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish provide in 'boring' Serbia win

Grealish and Rashford could have helped in the win over Serbia, says Paul Scholes

Via a recent story put on his official Instagram channel, Paul Scholes has expressed his frustration over the likes of Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish not being in Gareth Southgate’s UEFA Euro 2024 squad.

Taking to Instagram after England pulled off a cagey 1-0 win over Serbia in the opening Euro 2024 game, Scholes expressed his opinion on what Southgate could have had at this disposal in this manner:

Gareth Southgate and his men have been subjected to further criticism from England fans after their Serbia win, both for their performance and the substitutions, making Scholes one of many, many voices to offer alternative counsel.

England next face Denmark in their Group C game on Thursday. The Danes are coming into the game on the back of a 1-1 draw in their opening game Slovenia.

Maybe, but they are not here for a reason

Never before has there been a time that England fans haven’t had a critical take on the Three Lions, regardless of who the manager is and what he does.

And the pressure understandably mounts with every passing tournament, as the men’s team remain without a trophy 58 years after their last pick-up.

Given the talent at Southgate’s disposal, there was never going to be an England squad from which a few big-name players would be omitted. Rashford and Grealish have been omitted on merit or lack thereof. At another time, for another team, they could have yet made the cut, but England simply has better-performing players ahead of them.

Nothing apart from lifting the Euro 2024 trophy will absolve Southgate and his men of scathing criticism no matter how much their performance improves over the next games—that’s the bottom line.
