"I still have to find agreement"- Erik ten Hag says his new Manchester United contract is yet to be finalized

Man United and Ten Hag still pending contract agreement

Manchester United and Erik ten Hag are still waiting to reach an agreement regarding the manager’s contract extension, it has been revealed by the Dutchman.

He was given the green light to stay at Old Trafford for another season and the club is also keen on renewing Ten Hag’s contract at the back of a tense board review at the end of 2023/24.

Erik ten Hag is unlikely to have much say in Manchester United transfers.
Erik ten Hag and Manchester United are discussing a contract extension.

The former Ajax Amsterdam coach stated that the club had spoken to Thomas Tuchel, before deciding to retain his services in a meeting in Ibiza.

Mirror quoted Ten Hag saying the below in an interview with Dutch outlet NOS:

“Manchester United and I still have to find an agreement for the new contract. This isn’t easily done, we are still going to have to talk about this. United have told me that they spoke with Tuchel, but they eventually came to the conclusion that they already have the best manager. Ineos took their time. They are new in football, it’s normal to reflect the season. It’s no secret that they talked with multiple candidates.”

Erik ten Hag’s freedom as the head coach is expected to be diminished once he renews his contract, which is perhaps one of the reasons why he still has not penned fresher terms at Old Trafford.

With that said, it is to be kept in mind that one of the reasons why Ten Hag took the Manchester United job was due to the initial promise of having control over the club’s transfer activities.

However, with INEOS taking over, there has been a change in operational procedures at the club with the board now expected to retain control over the squad planning.

Manchester United part owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe is not happy with the club's facilities.
INEOS are expected to clip Ten Hag’s decision-making leeway at United.

In fairness, Ten Hag’s signings have also left a lot to be desired as heavy money spent on the likes of Andre Onana and Antony amongst others has not been justified.

United will continue to resolve the matter for as long as they possibly can, but the Dutch manager’s reticence in accepting a new contract due to a reduced role may prove as a blessing in diguise.

It would allow the Red Devils to eventually part ways with Ten Hag even though a number of his flaws have been overlooked in order to kickstart newer beginnings in the dugout as part of INEOS’ takeover.
