Manchester United have gained a boost in their pursuit of a defensive transfer target

The Red Devils could end up signing a Portuguese defender this summer.

As reported by Manchester Evening News, Manchester United are preparing to trigger the release clause of Sporting CP defender, Goncalo Inacio. Liverpool have also been linked with the 22-year-old defender in recent weeks.

Triggering his release clause would cost the team somewhere in the neighbourhood of £50m. While it may seem like an expensive price the Portuguese defender is more than worth it and has proved to be an excellent player.

Inacio made a total of 49 appearances for Sporting CP last season. He spent playing mostly as a centre-back and still managed to be some kind of a threat in the final third recording four goals and one assist.

Goncalo has three years left on his contract with Sporting CP, so it will be expensive for the team to make an offer for him. The best and surest way of signing him is to trigger his release clause and beat everyone else to the punch.

Manchester United are in desperate need of some fresh legs on defence. Jonny Evans and Raphael Varane are on their way out this summer and the team needs to replace them as fast as they can.

With these two, Man United will be losing out on a ton of quality. So, it only makes sense that the team wants to sign a quality defender like Goncalo Inacio.

If Manchester United are serious about going after Inacio this summer the team needs to show some promptness. If not, the Red Devils might lose out on the player to their PL rivals.
