In a recent social media interaction carried out by Man United’s official Instagram channel, former Red Devils Dimitar Berbatov and Rio Ferdinand backed England to win UEFA Euro 2024, with the club also wishing their English players Kobbie Mainoo and Luke Shaw well for the tournament.

Alongside Berbatov and Ferdinand, other former United players Juan Mata, Nani, Patrice Evra, Phil Neville, Mikaël Silvestre, and Bastian Schweinsteiger; each of them back their respective countries to win.

United’s underperforming and injury-ridden 2023/24 season sees only two of their English players make Gareth Southgate’s 26-man Euros squad.

Mainoo was transformational in his first full senior season at Old Trafford and has been in the news recently with distant rumours linking him to a move away from United.

Shaw, on the other hand, had another injury-filled season to forget as he made the England squad mostly due to Southgate’s estimation that England don’t have many high-profile specialist left-backs.

Mainoo and Shaw’s inclusion in England squad for Euro 2024 incredible

Only six months ago, few would have considered Mainoo to become one of the first names on the United team sheet, let alone breaking into the England squad and making the Euros.

Conversely, having been away from the pitch since February and made only 15 club appearances all season, few would have expected Shaw, who is still not fully fit but back in training, to make the Euros squad.

Hence, in their own way, it is remarkable that both Shaw and Mainoo have made the cut for the Euros owning to their respective travails in the last 12 months.
