Manchester United sensation Kobbie Mainoo going nowhere, says Fabrizio Romano

Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano has come out and confirmed that all stories linking Manchester United star Kobbie Mainoo with a move away from Old Trafford are “fake”.

Reports had started coming out of Spain recently, claiming that Barcelona were interested in the young midfielder that emerged as one of United’s shining lights this season.

However, in his recent Daily Briefing newsletter entry, Romano has confirmed that United are not interested whatsoever in considering a sale of the England international.

“You can forget about some of the fake news we’ve seen around Kobbie Mainoo, from a source which I don’t believe to be very credible.

“There is nothing between Mainoo and any other club – he is a crucial asset for Manchester United, and he is also very happy at Manchester United.

“We know they are working on a new contract for him, it’s one of their missions for this year – they will be pushing for that in the next months, so there is nothing to the rumours about Barcelona or any other club.

“I hope these fake stories will stop so Mainoo can just focus on doing his best job on the pitch – he’s a super talent and super professional, so just let him do his best for Manchester United and for England and forget about transfer rumours and all the negativity around him.”

Mainoo was one United’s best player’s last season and earned himself a spot in the senior England national setup on the back of it. He is currently in Germany as part of the Three Lions’ UEFA Euro 2024 squad.

The 19-year-old’s current £20k-a-week contract at Man United is set to run until June 2027. United are already planning to hand him a new, improved deal.

Too soon for Mainoo to be going anyway

Regardless of whatever rumours that may surface over the summer, it is highly unlikely Mainoo will go anywhere.

The 2023/24 season is the first proper senior campaign Mainoo has had under his belt. The Stockport-born local boy, having come through the United academy, is very unlikely to be wanting a move away, especially now that he knows he is one of the first names on the team sheet and a new contract is in the works.

We might hear a lot more noise regarding United’s young guns over the summer. Not just Mainoo, even the likes of Alejandro Garnacho will be subjected to whimsical rumours given United are not playing Champions League football next season. But it’s very likely that they’ll remain just that—rumours.
