Manchester United face stern Genoa competition for Zion Suzuki
Manchester United will reignite interest in signing Zion Suzuki this summer but are expected to face stern competition from Genoa, according to The Sun. Suzuki was on the club’s radar even last year but turned down a move to England as he was hopeful of playing in Japan’s Olympics campaign in Paris this summer.
Having proven himself while on loan at Belgian outfit Sint-Truiden, he has been called up to Japan’s squad and has already been watched by Man United during a camp in the United States.
Erik ten Hag is expected to be especially keen on adding the 21-year-old to his roster as his fantastic ball distribution from the back is seen as a crucial characteristic in the manager’s tactical setup.
It is understood that ten Hag’s leeway in dictating the course of United’s transfers has reduced following the board’s recent meeting regarding his future, but Suzuki would be a good young addition in either case as Andre Onana’s back-up.
The Premier League giants have been monitoring him for a long time and could end up securing a transfer this summer, though Genoa remain confident in their chances of signing the Japanese. The Serie A side is looking to tempt the goalkeeper by pointing towards their Champions League qualification for next season, a competition which has eluded Manchester United.
In addition, they would as well be willing to provide the shot-stopper with a regulation role in between the sticks whereas at Old Trafford, he may be Onana’s understudy for the near future. Sint-Truiden signed Suzuki on an initial loan fee of £1 million and can make the deal permanent for £4 million. It is likely the Belgian side will exercise its option to then sell the goalie for a higher price.
