Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag wants three signings this summer despite a tight transfer budget
Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has had his future clarified and he will take charge of the team heading into next season.
The Red Devils have a lot of work to do if they are to rank higher in the Premier League next season after an eighth place finish handed them their worst-ever position in the English top-flight.
According to Metro, when ten Hag’s future was under the scanner, Manchester United approached two former Chelsea managers, Mauricio Pochettino and Thomas Tuchel, to replace the Dutchman.
However, talks with neither coach materialised and ten Hag was given the green light to stay with a contract extension for the former Ajax Amsterdam manager also on the cards now.
Erik ten Hag will continue to have a say in United’s transfer business and has asking them to make three signings before the start of pre-season. He wants a new central defender, midfielder and striker.
The manager had spoken out in January regarding his need for a new number nine but Manchester United could not sign any player during the winter due to tight financial conditions. With Anthony Martial’s departure, the Red Devils have freed up a significant portion of their wage expense and can now afford to land a back-up for Rasmus Hojlund at the offensive tip.
It remains to be seen how much quality ten Hag can add to his squad with only a £35 million budget in hand, though it is bound to increase if Manchester United are able to sell a few players before. Casemiro, Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood are all expected to depart Old Trafford and their sales have the potential to earn close to £100 million for United, if not higher.
