Lille striker Jonathan David has been the subject of interest from Manchester United
Manchester United received a transfer boost in their pursuit of Jonathan David after Lille president Olivier Letang revealed that the Ligue 1 club are open to selling the Canadian international and sought-after young defender Leny Yoro this summer, as quoted in a report from the Sun.
Having decided to retain Erik ten Hag as their manager, the Red Devils’ hierarchy are now working on bolstering the squad ahead of the 2024/25 campaign. The club are looking for a new striker following the release of Anthony Martial upon the expiry of his contract.
Manchester United have reportedly drawn up a list of striker targets ahead of the summer transfer window which includes Lille’s Jonathan David. And now Lille president Olivier Letang has given a clear signal that they are ready to sell their star striker.
“Leny Yoro and Jonathan David can leave the club this summer,” Letang was quoted in a report from the Sun.
“Both have the ‘exit voucher’ due to their contract situation”.
Jonathan David, 24, just completed his fourth season at Lille where he netted 26 goals across all competitions. The Brooklyn-born centre-forward has been a consistent goalscorer for the Ligue 1 outfit since arriving from KAA Gent in 2020, netting 84 goals in 183 appearances.
The Canadian international could be of particular interest to INEOS and Manchester United because he is entering the final year of his contract, which could force Lille to cash him in this summer for a modest fee, rather than risk losing him on a Bosman transfer in 2025.
After a woeful 2023/24 campaign that was only salvaged to some extent with the FA Cup triumph over neighbours Manchester City, Man United are eyeing a new centre-forward to ensure they challenge for a top-four spot in the Premier League and compete for the Europa League next term.
Martial’s departure at the end of June would leave Rasmus Hojlund as the only recognised striker in Erik ten Hag’s ranks. The Denmark international netted 16 goals across all formats in his debut season at Old Trafford but the club are planning to provide him with more competition up top.
