Sergio Reguilón recently congratulated his compatriot Carlos Alcaraz after the latter won the 2024 French Open.

The ex-Man United left-back took to Instagram to share a story featuring a photo of him and Alcaraz in front of the Eiffel Tower in Paris to congratulate the 21-year-old tennis starlet.

The 27-year-old is entering the summer on the back of a trying 2023/24 season, the first half of which he spent at Man United, who brought him to Old Trafford on loan amid an injury crisis, before spending the latter half at Brentford, both times on loan from Spurs.

The Spain international failed to set the ground alight in either of those loan spells and is expected to return to Spurs ahead of the 2024/25 season.

Reguilón performed the role he was asked

Reguilón, known for his abilities on the overlap, was always going to find it hard to accommodate to a setup that also asked him to invert into midfield.

That said, that a transition-preferring player found it hard under a manager who, despite trying and setting up teams otherwise often came out to say that he indeed wanted to go for transition-heavy setups, is understandable; the befuddlement over Erik ten Hag’s tactical choices in the 2023/24 season extended to all of us.

Reguilón is unquestionably a talented player and will find a role for himself at some European topflight club next season. But it’s understandable why his term at Man United could not be elongated any further.
