After a poor campaign, Manchester United will turn their attention to international duty to help their respective nations succeed at Euro 2024
Manchester United goalkeeper Tom Heaton will be part of England’s Euro 2024 squad as a non-playing ‘training goalkeeper’, as confirmed by England Football’s official website.
The veteran shot-stopper, 38, flew with the England squad to Leipzig on Monday afternoon and will provide support to Jordan Pickford, Aaron Ramsdale and Dean Henderson for the duration of his nation’s involvement in the Euro 2024 campaign.
Tom Heaton joins an England squad that includes two of his Manchester United teammates in Kobbie Mainoo and Luke Shaw, with Gareth Southgate’s side set to face Serbia, Denmark and Slovenia in the group-stage matches.
Mainoo is the find of the season for the Red Devils. The teenager’s meteoric rise at the club has seen him being fast-tracked from England’s under-19s to the senior squad, after making his first-team debut for the Three Lions in the March friendlies. Shaw, meanwhile, has been battling injuries all season. He remains doubtful to start England’s first game against Serbia but there is hope the left-back will be available at some point in the campaign.
Denmark, one of England’s opponents in C, will have two Manchester United representatives in Christian Eriksen and Rasmus Hojlund. Eriksen is back representing the Danes at the European Championships, just three years after his horrible cardiac arrest on the pitch while competing for his country. The creative midfielder scored a fantastic winner for the country against Sweden in a friendly fixture earlier this month.
Hojlund had a fine debut season at Old Trafford following his move from Atalanta in 2023, netting 16 goals across all competitions. The young striker will be hoping to make a mark in the campaign and help Denmark go all the way.
Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot have deservingly been called up to the Portugal squad for the upcoming tournament. Fernandes has been a crucial cog for Roberto Martinez’s side, delivering the goods consistently in all 10 of Portugal’s qualifying games. Given Portugal’s excellent strength in depth, especially at the back, there’s no assurance that Dalot will be an automatic starter at full-back despite heading into the tournament off the back of a strong campaign with Man United.
