Facundo Pellistri hails hattrick hero Darwin Núñez as Uruguay slam Mexico 4-0
Facundo Pellistri acknowledged the outstanding performance of his compatriot Darwin Núñez on Instagram after the latter’s hattrick-scoring heroics against Mexico.
The Liverpool forward struck thrice in the international friendly against the North American side in the lead-up to the 2024 Copa América.
The Man United winger not only assisted Núñez’ third goal, he also scored his side’s second goal on the night.
After the game, the 22-year-old reposted a post from the official Uruguayan Football Association Instagram account, tagging his compatriot and club rival.
Pellistri’s showing in his last outing takes his international tally to one goal and seven assists in 20 caps.
On the United books since 2020, Pellistri has so far failed to become a mainstay in the Red Devils starting XI. He spent the latter half of the 2023/24 on loan at Granada, producing two goals and assists each in 15 appearances.
Crucial summer ahead for Pellistri
For all his talent, and despite his age, Pellistri has failed to impress at Old Trafford.
You’d think someone who is a mainstay for a big national team would also be plying his trade regularly in club football, but that has not been the case for the 22-year-old, and quite interestingly so.
Now, however, he’s reaching the age where he needs to find a club where he can play regularly.

It’s evident that he’s not going to get that United. And, given United are looking for a clean slate this summer, if Pellistri were to have a decent Copa América, he could become one of his club’s most valuable assets in the transfer market.
