Manchester United legend, Rio Ferdinand has no regrets about losing 2 UCL finals against Barcelona
Back in 2009 and then again in 2011 Manchester United reached and lost two UCL finals to FC Barcelona. This was back when Pep Guardiola was at the helm and the Catalan side was on top of the footballing world.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Rio Ferdinand’s final years at Manchester United ended with UCL final defeats at the hands of Lionel Messi and his crew. However, Old Trafford legend, Ferdinand has no regrets about the loss.
Recently, while speaking on The Overlap, Ferdinand said Barcelona’s quality took the sting of the loss out for him. Let’s have a look at what he had to say about losing two Champions League finals to Barcelona. (h/t The Overlap)
“We went to fight a war with no guns”
“The only time in my career where i’ve been in a game and i’ve thought we can’t do anything”
Ferdinand went on to say that Barcelona had the Manchester United team on a roundabout flying them dizzy. He then shed light on the look of disbelief he and Nemanja Matic gave each other at Wembley.
Gary Neville believes that if Manchester United had won those two UCL finals they’d be the best team in history. Unfortunately, the Catalan side were just too much to deal with for Sir Alex Ferguson and his Red Devils.
At the end of the day, it does give a bit of relief to know that they lost against a side that were just too good to beat. Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona must’ve made a lot of people feel that way back when he was at the helm.
